hyc Creative is the creation of Dawn Hylon Lucas-Carlson. A small private press founded in 2006. We print Letterpress greeting cards, bookmarks, coasters, prints, and invitations using a mix of found vintage blocks and fonts, hand carved linoleum blocks and newly created designs. Everything is hand-printed on a Kelsey 6 x 10 Excelsior Press.
hyc Creative is also a member of TheNewNew Etsy Team which has taught me a lot about promoting my creations and selling at fairs. You can find hyc Creative once in a while at the following locations; The Hester Street Fair, The Brooklyn Indie Market, Astoria Market, Crafts in Chelsea, and BUST Craftacular. You can find our cards year round at The Treehouse and Honey and Hazel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Caribou Baby in Greenpoint, Brooklyn
hyc Creative was published in, The Little Book of Letterpress and Reinventing Letterpress. You can see my zoo creations on pages 13 and 59. We were also published in Uppercase Magazine, Issue #8.
A hyc Creative history:
I've always been a lover of printed items, but actually being able to print from movable type seemed like a distant dream. After many searches on Ebay and the support of my now husband, I bought my Kelsey 6 x 10 Platen press in the summer of 2006. Though I took a Letterpress class in 2000, I had to relearn and familiarize myself with printing again. I scrubbed the press with steel wool and oiled it up while I anxiously awaited new rollers. I set up shop in our Brooklyn apartment that felt large before I acquired a ton of printing supplies. I've collected several vintage blocks and fonts from friends and ebay. I've also created several designs in Illustrator and made them into photo polymer plates via Boxcar Press. I've mostly been printing wedding invitations for my friends and selling cards on Etsy for the past 4 years. This last year I've had a renewed love of the art of printing. I've been dedicated to creating new card designs and expanding hyc Creative. I've been blogging about my inspirations and mistakes since June, 2010.
